How to Turn Crafting Into a Self-Care Ritual
Relaxation isn’t always about spa days. In this post, we’ll explore how you can transform crafting into a self-care ritual.

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to feel like life is constantly moving at full speed. Between work, responsibilities, and everything else on our plates, it can be easy to feel like it’s all too much to handle.
That’s why self-care matters. But self-care doesn’t always have to look like spa days, manicures, or massages. Sometimes self-care is simply setting aside time to do something creative, just because you enjoy it.
For many women, especially those high-achievers, crafting can become a deeply restorative practice. It’s a chance to step away from the screens, slow down, and reconnect with yourself.
If you’ve ever wondered how to turn crafting into something more intentional, here’s a simple guide to using crafting as self-care that you can return to whenever you need to recharge.
Step 1: Check In With Yourself First
Before you even pull out your craft supplies, take a moment to check in with yourself.
Ask yourself: “What do you actually need right now?”
As an introvert, I often find that crafting alone after a busy day feels like therapy. Sitting quietly with my materials gives my mind a chance to slow down and process the day.
But sometimes what we need is connection. Maybe you’ve been feeling a little isolated, and a casual craft night with friends would feel more restorative. Sharing creativity with others can be just as powerful as creating alone.
The key is to pause and ask yourself what would feel most nourishing in that moment. Crafting as self-care works best when it reflects what you genuinely need.
Step 2: Schedule Your Crafting Time

The next step is making space for creativity in your life.
This time is truly sacred, so act like it. One of the easiest ways to do this is to treat your crafting time the same way you would an important appointment. Put it on your calendar and make it a non-negotiable part of your week.
One of my favorite podcast hosts, Gretchen Rubin, often says, “Something that can be done at any time is often done at no time.” And honestly, that couldn’t be more true.
If we don’t intentionally schedule time for creativity, it often gets pushed aside by more “productive” tasks. So give yourself permission to set aside that time for yourself. Put your phone on Do Not Disturb if you need to. Ask your partner to watch the kids for an hour.
Your creativity deserves a place in your life too.
Step 3: Set the Tone for Self-Care
Part of turning crafting into a self-care ritual is creating an environment that helps you relax.
Think about what kind of atmosphere helps you unwind. Maybe that means putting on your favorite playlist or listening to a podcast while you work. Other times, you might want something more calming like soft music or even just sitting in silence.
Some people like to turn on a comfort show in the background while they craft, and that works too. YOU DO YOU! Remember that there’s no “right” way for crafting to look (or sound). The goal is to create a space where you can unwind.
Step 4: Get Cozy and Comfortable

If crafting is going to feel like an act of self-care, comfort matters.
When I sit down to create, I usually start by getting cozy. For me this looks like hair up, pajamas on, and a warm cup of tea nearby. It’s a small ritual, but it signals to my brain that it’s time to slow down.
Think about the things that help you feel supported and relaxed. Maybe you want to curl up with a soft blanket while you color, sit in your favorite chair to knit, or spread out your supplies at the kitchen table with a candle nearby.
These small details might seem simple, but they help transform crafting from “just another activity” into a moment of intentionally caring for yourself.
Step 5: Let Go of Perfection
If you’re a high-achiever or a recovering perfectionist like I am, it can be difficult to create without putting pressure on yourself. It’s easy to start judging the final result instead of enjoying the process.
But crafting as self-care isn’t about producing a masterpiece. It’s about giving yourself permission to create without expectations.
Your project doesn’t need to look like the tutorial you followed. It doesn’t need to be “Pinterest-worthy.” The point is simply to spend time creating something with your hands and allowing your mind to rest.
Let yourself experiment. Make something imperfect. Try something new. When you finally let go of the need for perfection, crafting becomes much more freeing.
Creativity Can Be a Form of Self Care
Crafting is often seen as just a hobby, but it can be so much more than that.
When done intentionally, it becomes a moment to pause, breathe, and reconnect with yourself. It’s a chance to step away from productivity and simply enjoy the act of creating. In a world that constantly pushes us to do more and move faster, choosing to slow down and make something with your hands can be a quiet act of resistance.
So the next time you’re feeling overwhelmed, consider reaching for your craft supplies instead of your phone. You might be surprised by how restorative those “silly little crafts” can be.
