We all have way too many old clothes sitting around. With spring cleaning season in full swing, this easy DIY project is a great way to turn old t-shirts into durable dog toys instead of tossing them out.
These braided dog toys are simple to make, beginner-friendly, and a fun way to give worn-out clothing a second life.
Why Make Dog Toys From Old T-Shirts?
A lot of clothing gets donated to thrift stores, but unfortunately, much of it still ends up in landfills. Repurposing old t-shirts into dog toys is an easy way to reduce waste while creating something useful.
I don’t actually have a dog, so I first made one for my aunt’s dog. But once I got started, I got super into it and ended up making more than 30 dog toys to donate to my local animal shelter!

One of my favorite things about this craft is how relaxing it becomes once you get into the repetitive knotting pattern.
Donation Ideas
Not only are these DIY dog toys perfect for your own dog and to make as gifts, they also can be great donation items! Get together with a group of friends, gather a stack of old t-shirts, and start the upcycling!
Note: It’s always a good idea to call animal shelter first and/or check their donation requirements. Not all shelters will take handmade items.
When making these homemade dog toys in big amounts, you can get organized by assigning different tasks within your group or even setting your materials up in an assembly line. Plus, you can get creative with color combinations since you’ll have a large amount of fabric to work with. I found my favorite was to combine 4 different colors, but it’s totally up to you!
What You Need
- Old t-shirts
- Scissors
- Fabric scissors or a rotary cutter (optional, but even better than regular scissors)
Best Fabric to Use
Non-stretchy cotton t-shirts work best for this project because they create thicker, sturdier dog toys.
Stretchier fabrics can still work, but they tend to create thinner toys since the material tightens more when pulled.
Keep in mind that you can use any size t-shirt to make these dog toys, but the size of the shirt will affect the final size of the dog toy. Plus, no matter the size, make sure to wash your shirts before getting started.
How to Make DIY Dog Toys From Old T-Shirts
Step 1: Cut the T-Shirt Into Strips

Lay your t-shirt flat on a table or cutting surface.
Cut across the torso of the shirt to create 4 equal loops of fabric. Then cut along one side of each loop so you end up with 4 long strips.
Step 2: Tie the Starting Knot

Gather all 4 strips together and tie a tight knot at one end, leaving a small tassel of fabric at the top.
Step 3: Create the Woven Knot Pattern

Arrange the strips in a cross shape.
Take one strip and fold it over the strip beside it. Continue overlapping each strip over the next in a circular pattern. Tuck the final strip through the first loop, then pull all the strips tightly to form a secure square knot.
Repeat this woven knot pattern until you reach the end of the fabric strips.
Here is a detailed look at the folding technique:
Step 4: Finish the Dog Toy

Leave enough fabric at the end to tie one final knot. Pro tip: You might need a little more than you think!
Trim the edges evenly if needed, and your DIY dog toy is finished.
Final Thoughts

Dog toys might seem complicated to make, but they’re surprisingly simple once you learn the pattern. After a few knots, you’ll get in the zone.
Not only are these toys sustainable and budget-friendly, but DIY dog toys they also make thoughtful handmade gifts for dog parents or great donation items for animal shelters.
Bonus points: Making these totally reminded me of the plastic lanyards I used to make as a kid, which adds a little nostalgic touch that I love. Anyone else make those growing up?
