How to Start Crafting: A Beginner’s Guide (Even If You Don’t Feel Creative)
In this beginner’s guide to crafting, I’ll show you exactly how to start— even if you have no experience, no ideas, and feel completely stuck.

Crafting can feel like a whole new world… because it kind of is. There are so many different crafts you can try, and honestly, a lot to learn. If you’ve ever thought “I’m just not a creative person” or felt overwhelmed by where to start, you’re not alone.
In this guide I’ll walk you through how to start crafting, even if you have no experience and no idea what you’re doing.
Decide Your Purpose
Before you jump in, ask yourself: why do I want to start crafting?
Are you looking to:
- De-stress after a long day?
- Make personalized gifts for loved ones?
- Get creative with your mementos?
- Give a new life to items you have at home?
Getting clear on your purpose will help guide what type of projects you start with, and keep you motivated when things feel hard.
Get Inspiration (The Easy Way)

You’ve probably heard artists say they get inspiration from nature or personal experience. And if that works for you,s that’s great!
But let me be real here. For me, the idea of finding inspiration this way just never felt intuitive. If this resonates with you, then while you’re just starting out on your creative journey, don’t overcomplicate it.
You don’t need to come up with ideas out of thin air. Go online! Platforms like Pinterest and YouTube are full of beginner craft ideas and step-by-step tutorials. Pinterest is my favorite place to save ideas for upcoming craft projects. You can see what I’m pinning for inspiration.
And no, it’s not cheating!
For the longest time, I thought I wasn’t creative because I struggled to come up with my own craft ideas. But then I realized something important:
You don’t have to invent something from scratch to be creative. If you can see a project and put your own spin on it, you are creative.
Just Choose One Thing
This is where a lot of people get stuck. Scrolling. Saving. Overthinking. Researching all the best supplies that you just HAVE to have.
Analysis paralysis is real. 😵💫 But the good news? There is no perfect first project. So let go of the pressure. There will always be something “better” you could try. And you’ll have time to try it all.
But the most important thing? Just pick one for now. Even if it’s not perfect. Even if you’re unsure.
You can always try something else later.
Set the Bar Low
When you’re starting a new creative hobby, it’s tempting to go all in. But that can backfire fast.
Start with something that feels almost too simple. Why? Because the goal isn’t perfection here, it’s momentum.
Simple wins help build your confidence. And confidence keeps you going, especially when trying something completely new.
Gather Your Supplies (Without Overdoing It)

Learn from my mistakes on this one.
I’ve definitely seen a craft online, bought EVERYTHING for it… and then either:
- tried it once and let it collect dust in the closet, or
- brought it home and didn’t even touch it for months
Like my Cricut which sat in the box untouched for months because I was too overwhelmed to learn to use it. 😅
Instead:
- Buy only what you need for one project
- Use what you already have
- Test things out before investing in expensive tools
This keeps crafting fun without being bad for your wallet.

What If I Still Don’t Feel Creative?
I know you probably don’t wanna hear this, but my answer to this question is simple. DO IT ANYWAY.
Because here’s the thing, creativity is a muscle you have to build. Maybe at first you’ll feel awkward or you’ll be “bad at” the craft you choose. And that’s okay!
Creativity isn’t something you’re either born with or not. Keep getting out of your comfort zone, keep practicing and watch how it gets easier.
Remember This

Crafting doesn’t have to be overwhelming. You don’t need the perfect idea, the best supplies, or even confidence to start.
You just need to start.
Try one small project. Keep it simple. Let yourself learn as you go. Because creativity isn’t something you either have or don’t have— it’s something you build.
