Why I Started Crafty on Purpose

In this post we’ll talk about my journey with intentional crafting and what led me to start my blog, Crafty on Purpose.

Why I Started Crafty on Purpose

Hi, I’m Marlene! Welcome to Crafty on Purpose

My blog is all about intentional crafting. I share my journey with creativity in hopes of inspiring others to use their hands to connect, care for themselves, preserve memories, and give things a new life.

Where It All Started

Childhood artwork with the letter M

As a kid, I always dreamed of creating. I loved drawing, designing outfits, and making little 3D miniatures out of paper. (Yes, I was into paper crafts way before I ever got a Cricut lol) Over the years, I wanted to be an artist, a fashion designer, an author, and an illustrator.

But somewhere along the way, I lost my confidence. I started comparing my work to others and convinced myself that I just “wasn’t that good at art.” And as I got older, I started to believe that I needed to find a “real job.”

Finding My Way Back to Creativity

Fast forward to the pandemic. Like many of us, I suddenly had time— and I needed something to fill it.

I came across a digital portrait online and found a tutorial for it. The artist was using the Procreate app, and it didn’t seem too difficult. So I bought myself an iPad and decided to give it a try.

Because here’s the thing about me… my most toxic trait is that I look at something and think, “I can make that.” 😅

Spoiler alert: it was harder than it looked. But I kept going. I even started posting my art online— which was a HUGE deal for me. Putting myself out there like that felt scary, but also really empowering.

And although it felt like I was drawing for the first time (because it had been years since I’d allowed myself to), what I was really doing was giving myself permission to be creative again.

Crafting Now

As time went on, I bought a Cricut machine and started experimenting with all kinds of projects.

Since then, I’ve tried embroidery, metal jewelry stamping, painting, you name it! And here’s the thing: I’m not an expert at any one thing, and I’m okay with that.

What I am is someone who has spent years crafting mindfully, learning through experience, and even teaching others along the way. As a former teacher, I incorporated Cricut projects into a basic computer class for adults— helping complete beginners build confidence with both technology and creativity.

Now, I love helping others discover just how approachable and joyful crafting can be.

Why I Craft

These days, I don’t create for perfection. In fact, I’m doing the opposite. I’m creating to unlearn perfectionism. Tell me I’m not the only recovering perfectionist here!

I’m constantly fighting the urge to overthink and make everything “just right.” But crafting helps me quiet that noise. It gives me a sense of peace after a long day. It allows me to take something old and give it new life. And it gives me a way to show up for others and create something with them in mind.

My crafting is full of love. It’s intentional. It’s thoughtful. And more than anything, it’s a reminder that creativity doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful.

So, Where Do I Go From Here?

If any part of this resonated with you, you’re in the right place.

I hope this space inspires you to pick up your scissors, crayons, or paint and just create, without any pressure.

Create with purpose. Create with love. That’s what really matters. 💗
